Portugal National Day

Keeping Europe behind its borders while being open to the ocean they’ve mastered best, Portugal has had the same defined borders since 1139, making it the oldest nation-state in Europe and today the 10th June, the country celebrates its National Day.

This is a day commemorating the death of its national literary figure and poet Camões. He wrote Os Lusíadas (usually translated as The Lusiads), Portugal's national epic poem. The poem focuses mainly on the 15th-century Portuguese explorations and is considered one of the finest and most important works in Portuguese literature. According to popular folklore, Camões saved his epic poem by swimming with one arm while keeping the other arm above water. Since his date of birth is unknown, his date of death is celebrated as Portugal's National Day. Here is an extract from Os Lusíadas:

That the Nymphs of the Ocean, so beautiful,
Tethys and the angelic painted Island,
Are none other than the delightful
Honours that render life sublime

Although celebrations were suspended during rough times in the 20th century, but they resumed later on to even include Portuguese emigrants and their descendants living in communities all around the world. The celebrations involve various military ceremonies, exhibitions, concerts, pageants and parades, and an awards ceremony by the President of the Portuguese Republic.

Being a gate to Europe and the ocean, Portugal has a business friendly environment that encourages investors and a tempting touristy one that attracts visitors from all around the globe. As a touristy country, Portugal has all types of hotels and one of the best cuisines in Europe.

Russian Day

From the Far East to the doorsteps of Western Europe, and from Tsar to the world’s first peoples’ Union, the biggest country in the world stretches across two continents covering 17 million sq km (6.6 million sq miles), accounting for more than one ninth of Earth’s terrestrial area. This is Russia and today 12th June, it celebrates its National Day. Russia Day is the Day of adoption of the declaration of state sovereignty of RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic) back in 1990. The passage of this Declaration by the First Congress of People's Deputies marked the beginning of constitutional reform in the Russian Soviet state.

On this occasion, people may attend concerts and fireworks that take place in many cities throughout the country. Prominent Russian writers, scientists and humanitarian workers receive State Awards from the President of Russia on this day. Naturally, most public offices and schools are closed on June 12. Since the day commemorates the Soviet Union's dissolution, it brings back bitter memories for some. This is because the dissolution initially led to harsh times the country has faced.

In contrast, peoples flow to the streets with high spirits of joy to celebrate this occasion. One of the celebrations in Moscow showcased a three-hour concert and concluded a six-month contest over the "Seven Wonders of Russia". In Red Square, 20 lines of stage pyrotechnics, confetti cannon in the colors of the Russian flag and 100 guns. Many Russians think that this holiday is Russia's Independence Day, but the holiday has never had such a name in official documents.

Russia’s climate is mainly cold as it’s adjacent to the North Pole. However, the country has a moderate European climate during spring and summer. So it’s a thrill to the visit this diverse country for tourism or business purposes. If you’re planning to visit Russia, you need to remember that without the help of local connections, you’ll probably face a number of difficulties. For example, presents symbolizing the stature of your company and the importance of the impending business deal can help establish a good communication with local businessmen. What’s more, Patience is important with Russians as negotiations can often be slow. Here we remember the Russian proverb that states, do not ‘hurry to reply’, but ‘hurry to listen’. Russians don’t usually make an immediate decision in a meeting; usually a certain amount of deliberation is done in private afterwards.

With these points being mentioned and in this great occasion, we at IFPLS are glad to assist you and support your business or tourism needs all over the country. We know that Russian Aviation regulations is too much complicated for most of the Airliners and business operator, but as We are very good listener for our Russian partners advise we have collected the full knowledge of Russian Aviation regulations and we can help you with any issue you may have whenever you have decided to operate to or Over Russia.

Iceland National Day

Early Democracy at Sea:

Born from the sea, it is home to Europe’s first parliament. Iceland today 17th June is celebrating a very special day. Back to 1262, Iceland lost its independence to the Norwegian crown and later became a Danish colony in 1380, but in 1944 the country gained its independence. The date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Jón Sigurðsson, a major figure of Icelandic culture and the leader of the 19th century Icelandic independence movement, who fought hard for Iceland to gain independence, although he was not around when it finally came. So Happy Birthday Jón.

Each year one woman is selected to be the 'Lady of the Mountain', that serves as the female incarnation of Iceland. She dresses in the national costume and leads the parade, before reading a poem by the statue of Jón Sigurðsson at Austurvöllur square, where the parade ends. Icelanders celebrate this holiday on a national scale. The celebration traditionally takes the form of a parade through each urban area with a brass band at the fore. Riders on Icelandic horses often precede the brass band and flag bearers from the Icelandic scout movement traditionally follow the brass band.

An Ideal Location for Investors and a Business-Friendly Environment:

Iceland is located midway between Europe and North America. This North Atlantic island has an area of 103,000 km2. It is world-renowned for its economic advancement, social stability, and technological innovation, and is continually ranked as one of the preeminent societies on Earth. Keflavik Airport near Reykjavik is Iceland's principal international airport, with daily flights going all over the world. Flight duration is 2.5-5 hours to Europe and 5-6 hours to the United States (East Coast) and Canada. The US government has identified Keflavik airport as one of several candidate airports to bring in US foreign preclearance customs and passport controls. Should the United States give such authorization, passengers travelling from Iceland would be able to clear US customs and passport control at Keflavik International Airport.

To add, Iceland’s corporate income tax of 20% is one of the lowest in Europe and among the OECD member countries. For more than a decade, the government has tailored packages of measures to fit wage contracts negotiated in collective bargaining between employers and unions.

What’s note mentioning is that Iceland has an extensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China, signed on April 15, 2013. Combined with Iceland membership of the common European Market, its ideal location between North America and Europe, as well as an advanced business environment and infrastructure, this FTA opens new opportunities for investors seeking to export to the world fastest growing market.

Burundi Independence Day

Focus on Africa:

With high aspirations of a brighter future, the relatively small-in-size African country, Burundi, calls out its motto “Ubumwe, Ibikorwa, Iterambere” which means “Unity, Work, Progress” in Kirundi, the official language of the country.

As early as the 16th century, Burundi emerged to the world as a kingdom. The kingdom lasted till 1899, when it became a part of German East Africa. Later in 1916, Belgian troops conquered the country to become under Belgian mandate. As of 1st July 1962, Burundi gained its independence and today it celebrates this National Holiday.

On this day, parades run through the streets and local celebrations take place. Joyful dances, both indoors and outdoors, are also seen. The people of Burundi remind themselves that they’re an independent nation sharing the concept of autonomy and peace with the entire world.

Pack Your Bags:

If you’re planning for a holiday, Burundi could be your African choice. Ecotourism is one of the major areas of tourism in Burundi. Kibira National Park, Rurubu River and Lake Tanganyika are considered major natural habitats for wildlife. There are also numerous wildfowl lakes, such as Rwihinda Lake Natural Reserve.

Burudian drummers, locally known as Abatimbo, are one of the major cultural attractions. Wooden drums are part of ancient Burundi culture. Their sound is known as "ancient" and "sacred" sound in Burundi and also a symbol of unity. In 2014, the ritual Burundian drum dance was placed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

British Virgin Islands Territory Day

Territory Day:

1st of July 1967 the Caribbean exotic islands, The British Virgin Islands, celebrate their National Day known as Territory Day. The story of the Islands began when Christopher Columbus sighted this group of islands in 1943 during his second voyage to the Americas. Columbus then named them after Saint Ursula and her 11,000 Virgins, shortened to Las Vírgenes (The Virgins). Although the Spanish Empire claimed the islands by discovery, the empire never settled in them.

The islands make up part of the Virgin Islands archipelago; the remaining islands constitute the US Virgin Islands and the Spanish Virgin Islands. The official name of the Territory is still simply the "Virgin Islands", but the prefix "British" is often used to distinguish it from the neighbouring American territory which changed its name from the "Danish West Indies" to "Virgin Islands of the United States". Territory Day for the British Virgin Islands is a day to celebrate being a British overseas territory. In the Caribbean today, voices of allegiance to the UK are heard.

Territory Day Celebrations and Customs:

The day is kept by patriotic speech-giving, musical concerts, and various festivities that occur all across the islands. It is about more than the historic reason for the holiday, nowadays. It is a matter of territorial pride in being a BVI citizen. The celebration of Territory Day provides an opportunity for Virgin Islanders to develop a sense of national pride. The ceremony signaling the start of the holiday begins with the inspection of the guards by the Governor and the Chief Minister. There are also musical selections by various schools.

A shift to remember:

From the 1960s onwards, the islands have slowly switched from an agriculture-based economy towards tourism and financial services. The British Virgin Island has transformed into one of the wealthiest areas in the Caribbean. The "four pillars" of the economy are tourism, financial services, agriculture and fishing. Politically, tourism is the most important of the four, as it employs a greater number of people within the Territory, and a larger proportion of the businesses in the tourist industry are locally owned.

IFPLS is pleased to share the joy and happiness of the British Virgin Islands Territory Day. On this occasion, we would like to offer our services in the territory.

Rwanda Independence Day

An Ancient Print:

Over 10 thousand years ago, humans settled on this spot of approximately 26.338 Sq. kilometers just few kilometers southern to the equator. Rwanda known as “Land of thousand hills” today 1st July celebrates its 57th Independence Day.

By the 16th, Rwanda became a kingdom and by the 19th century it gained momentum that resulted in an alliance with Germany and Belgium, two major powers in central Africa at that time. WWI bursts and changes the map of Africa. At the end of the war, Germany relinquished its holdings to Belgium, and in turn the later accepted the League of Nations Mandate of 1916 to govern Rwanda and Burundi as the territory Ruanda-Urundi. In 1962 however, the once-joined union gained independence from Belgium to become Rwanda and its neighbor Burundi.

African Democracy:

Rwanda has world’s record of highest representation of women in parliament, as over 60% of parliament members are women. Rwanda is also the only country in the world where people alongside their President participate in National service activities “Umuganda” every last Saturday of month.

Tourism or Business:

According to World Bank’s doing business reports of 2016, Rwanda is the 2nd African country suitable for doing business. The country is considered as one of the best country with high internet connectivity in Africa as Rwandan Government is spreading the internet facilities like construction of fiber optic in all parts of country. Rwanda is one of African leading digital revolutions, as every services needed from any public institution for instance; Tax declaration and payment, Traffic penalties’ payment, Business registration among other services are done online.

Rwanda has 3 National Parks, The country also has many remarkable places to visit depending on the type of tourism you are interesting in like; cultural tourism, Dark tourism, business tourism. building business in Rwanda is too much facilitated and easier than other African countries, for example issuing a certifications for construction or manufacturing business takes around two to three working days and you are ready to go. As a result, Rwanda is often overlooked as a profitable and viable option. The more you stay the more you enjoy the country with excellent hospitality.

Canada Day

In Unity Lies Power:

Canada is the second largest country and a commonwealth nation that stands out to its morals. It is famous for being one of the friendliest countries in the world with a population of around 38 million proud citizens.  July 1st 2019, marks the anniversary of the formation of the Union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada back in 1867, but Canada Day also means the biggest national party the country can ever witness.

High Spirits:

Canada Day celebrations take place throughout the country, as well as in various locations around the world, attended by Canadians living abroad. Celebrations like fireworks and parades are generally held on this day. In major cities outside of Quebec, like Ottawa and Toronto, Ontario, and Vancouver, British Columbia, celebrations begin early in the day and continue into the evening, with concerts, games, and other festivities. Ottawa, in particular, as the nation's capital, puts on a really big show every July 1st. In 2010, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, attended the celebrations. In 2011, Prince William and his bride, Kate Middleton, made their way to Ottawa for Canada's 144th birthday party.

Move Northward:

Canada has a large domestic and foreign tourism industry. It has an incredible geographical variety with a significant tourism attraction. The large cities are known for their culture, diversity, as well as the many national parks and historic sites. In 2012, over 16 million tourists arrived in Canada. What’s astounding about Canada is that it has 3 million lakes in Canada if you include smaller lakes as well. That’s more lakes than what the rest of the world has combined.

On the other hand, there are 17 World Heritage sites in Canada, including one of the oldest, Nahanni National Park, Northwest Territories, and one of the newest, the Red Bay Basque Whaling Station, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The United States of America Independence Day

Detachment from the Crown:

July 1776, during the second year of the American Revolutionary War (1775–83), representatives from 13 North American colonies of the kingdom of Great Britain voted to declare themselves independent from the crown, forming the United States of America. Two days after the historic vote, on 4 July 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Drafted mostly by Thomas Jefferson, a prominent lawyer and planter from Virginia (and later the third president of the United States between 1801–09), the Declaration of Independence features the famous lines: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal” and have “certain unalienable rights” – among them “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.

Celebrations:

Independence Day is a day of family celebrations with picnics and barbecues, showing a great deal of emphasis on the American tradition of political freedom. Activities associated with the day include watermelon or hotdog eating competitions and sporting events, such as baseball games, three-legged races, swimming activities and tug-of-war games.

Many people display the American flag outside their homes or buildings. Many communities arrange fireworks that are often accompanied by patriotic music. The most impressive fireworks are shown on television.

Do airplanes dump their fuel before landing?

It is well known for all aviators that the maximum gross take-off weight, for most aircrafts, is higher than the maximum landing weight. If the airplane has an emergency that requires an air return or other landing in the early part of flight, it is highly likely that its overweight will prevent its landing as early as possible, therefore the pilot in command will have the following 3 options at this point:

1.       Fly around at low altitude and high power to burn fuel.

2.       Land overweight.

3.       Dump fuel (if able).

Flying around at low altitude and high engine power, could be the best choice to burn the extra fuel if there is enough time before emergency landing. As an aircraft climbs from take-off to its cruise altitude the air pressure decreases. Interestingly, the “standard” air pressure at sea level is 14.7 psi. The exact pressure varies somewhat with the weather patterns. In other words, the aircraft consumes more fuel when flying at low altitude. Accordingly, the fuel consumption decreases with increasing aircraft altitude as the air pressure decreases, and vice versa.

On the other hand, overweight landing is severely dangerous in every situation on every aircraft, the major concerns for overweight landing are:

§  As the landing weight increases, the approach and touchdown speeds increase, and the aircraft require more distance to decelerate. In this case the landing field length may become an issue if the selected runway is smaller than the requirements.

§  Loads on the landing gear according to the higher rates of the touchdown in case of overweight landings. Although, the wheel, brake and tire design are based on the landing stop conditions at maximum take-off weight, but if these limits exceeded, the airplane will need maintenance for sure.

In some cases, the pilot can dump fuel in order to make an emergency landing. This is done to avoid the excessive weight of the aircraft while landing at places where suitable conditions might not exist. However, this option may not be available for some airplanes including airplanes that are not equipped to dump fuel or are not approved to dump fuel at their current location and altitude. For these airplanes, only option 1 and 2 are available.

Sometimes, this same concept of fuel dumping is used in what is called “a dump-and-burn” when fuel is ignited intentionally using the plane’s afterburner to create a spectacular flame for air shows or as a finale to fireworks.

Anyway, when there is a need to proceed with fuel dumping this should be coordinated with air traffic control, and precautions are taken to keep other aircraft out of the dumping areas. Moreover, fuel dumping usually takes place at a high enough altitude so that the fuel will evaporate before reaching the ground. The speed with which fuel can be dumped varies according to Aircraft type, but most of aircrafts can reach its standard maximum landing weight within few minutes.

Thankfully, most of the fuel will evaporate before it even hits the ground when it has been done in suitable altitude. This is more likely on warmer days and when an aircraft is high up in the atmosphere -- ideally above 5,000 feet (1,524 meters), if the jettison is done in lower altitude it may cause a water pollution or another environmental risks for plants, animals and humans. Fortunately, fuel jettison isn't very common and is done in emergency-type situations only, and it is normally done after coordination with the air traffic controller over an area of little population or over water when the aircraft altitude is suitable to avoid pollution and other bad environmental effects.

Well planned flights that have well managed fuel calculation will let airlines minimize fuel consumption and avoid such fuel waste in emergency time, experienced flight planning companies like IFPLS will help you to save your fuel and money and provide you with pre-flight emergency plan if needed.

Belgium Independence day (Ascension to the Throne of King Leopold I)

On this day in 1831, King “Leopold I” took the oath as the first king of the Belgians at the Royal Palace in Brussels, signaling Belgium’s emergence as a sovereign state as distinct from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.

IFPLS would like to celebrate Belgium’s National Day, a commemoration of that historic event.

The Belgian flag, with its tricolor stripes representing the red lion of Hainaut, Limburg, and Luxembourg, the yellow lion of Brabant, and the black lion of Flanders and Namur, will be displayed.

Festivities begin a day early with a concert by the National Orchestra of Belgium at BOZAR, the Center for Fine Arts in Brussels. That same evening, a National Ball takes place in the capital city’s historic Marolles district.

The Belgian Royal Family starts National Day by attending a special service at the Cathedral of Saint Michael and Saint Gudula. At prominent public buildings like the Palace of Justice and European Parliament, there are cultural events and family-friendly activities, as well as a parade featuring military and emergency services followed by a night fireworks spectacular.

In recent years, the number of international tourists has exponentially grown as key figures shown reached a new milestone when more than 1.5 billion tourists arrived after 2015.

Business in Belgium is too much facilitated, Belgium has an open economy and a fairly formalized business culture similar to its European neighbors. According to EU statistics, there are over 620,000 active businesses in Belgium. Belgium is considered a good place to start up a business and it has a strong entrepreneurial culture, especially in Brussels and some of the bigger cities. There are many sectors where expats can look to start a business in Belgium. The country’s largest sector is the service sector, with tourism, financial and IT services all strong.

Brussels airport ( EBBR / BRU ) is one of the most busiest airports in the world, Aircraft operator shall consider and obtain an approval for the time slot for arrival and departure before arriving to Brussels. It is very difficult to obtain the time slot on the desired time if you submitted your application in a short notice.

if you would like to travel to Belgium for Business, tourism or any other purposes, IFPLS will be pleased to help you with any services related to corporate, airlines or to personal individual assist.

IFPLS can help you with Arrival and departure slot approval, Aircraft ground handling, Fuel , Catering  and Crew services, in addition to individual services such as meet & greet, Hotels booking, Car rental and VIP services.

IFPLS can help you at any of the following airports in Belgium 24/7 without any delay:

EBAW / ANR Antwerp
